The Indian Human Resource Center began its operation in September 7, 1979 in San Diego, CA providing employment and training programs.  Since then, IHRC has expanded its scope of services to include numerous programs for the benefit of the 50,000 American Indians, representing over 250 different tribes, residing in off-reservation areas of San Diego County.

Despite great advances made by a relatively few American Indian tribes from the gaming industry, economic development and self-sufficiency efforts, the great majority of the 500 tribes across the country suffer from 80% unemployment and its accompanying social problems.

In San Diego County, unemployment and poverty rates for American Indians are double that of the general population. San Diego, with its climate and relatively low unemployment, is a magnet for Indians who are looking to change their lives for the better and who arrive at our center with few resources.  Over 800 families are served directly by our office yearly and contacts via telephone and walk-ins that are offered information and referral services total over 2,000.
